Harry Potter Party: 9-year-old birthday party

Harry Potter is one of the kids’ favourite heroes as they get older and forget cars, spiderman, batman and other superheroes or cartoons. Like many kids of the same age, our 9-year-old boy chose Harry Potter for his birthday cake, which helped us decide the concept of the whole party.

Pinterest and Google became my best friends for a while. I found many interesting ideas for magic parties, so I chose the ones I believed were better for our son and his friends regarding the time available for the party preparation and the budget.

During all the party preparation, I had three little elves to help me! Below you can see everything we did to make the party “a day to remember” (#make_memories) and spend some time together with some DIY projects (#do_it_with_kids_projects)!

Magic wands

I bought chopsticks, which we transformed into magic wands using colourful silicone. It was very amusing, we all loved it!

In the beginning, my elves wanted their wands to be fancy with many colours and beads, although, in the end, they preferred more straightforward wands. We made 30 wands, one for each kid.

We first used the wands on the table decoration of the party, then kids played with them and finally, all the guests took their wands as souvenirs.

Magic Potion

I made a super magic liquid for magic skills! Some drops of blue pastry colouring were enough to make a tasty blue soft drink. I used a large glass jar with a tap for the magic potion and small plastic glasses for each kid. The liquid was water combined with seven-up.

I believed that some kids would hesitate to try it. Fortunately, it proved I was wrong. Almost all little guests were brave enough to consume even a little quantity, while some asked for more. After drinking the magic potion, kids had blue teeth and blue tongues for a while, so they started to admire their beauty and new style in front of a mirror, making fun of their unique appearance.

Magic brooms

Is there a magic party without magic brooms? Definitely no! So, one part of our project was to create magic brooms. I found many ideas on the internet with paper bags.

For each broom, I used:

The result was excellent! Our magic brooms were good-looking and great for table decoration. They also had something tasty inside!

What I liked most about the brooms was that I made them with my little elves. Everyone had a specific role. I had the cutter for the strips for safety reasons, while the kids had their roles: one cut the bags, one filled in the bags with popcorn, one managed the elastic bands and the twine.

You can see the result in the following photos.

Some kids took their brooms as they left like little souvenirs while others discovered what was hidden inside and preferred to consume their popcorn at the party.

Honestly, I was impressed with how much they liked popcorn, even though they had eaten other treats earlier.

If I could change something, I would have used larger paper bags to have space for more popcorn.

Photo Props

I printed magic hats found on Google that helped us draw magic hats on cardboard. Firstly, the kids cut them and then we used silicone glue to fix them on wooden sticks. I also bought two pairs of plastic glasses. We put them on the table as photo props.

Piñata

A talented friend made a piñata for our party. Red and yellow, very tough, very beautiful! I think it is the most beautiful piñata I have ever seen until now.

We also had balloons, many balloons! Girls also loved face painting, took the colours and used the mirror to paint themselves.

Some more photos reveal more details of our party decorations. We hope they can inspire you if you are close to your next kid’s party!
