Reading, writing, spelling and simple math are some of the skills children acquire in their early school years. Some children learn effortlessly and fast, while others face difficulties and feel pressed. That’s why it’s critical to help them practise in an enjoyable way that will allow us to connect more with them and spend quality time. In our post, Practical Math: How can we help kids to love numbers and mathematics?, we’ve presented simple methods to help kids practise numbers and mathematics. So, now it’s time for spelling! We suggest 5+1 simple ways to help kids improve their spelling skills.
1. Write down the shopping list
Request kids to do a shopping list. This helps them write all the everyday words while making them feel they are helping you with the daily tasks.

2. Write down a list of travel equipment
Another list! Lists are a brilliant means to urge kids to practise writing. Additionally, it teaches them to be more organized.
So, If you plan a family travel, writing down all the items you will need to put in your bags is an excellent task for a newbie in spelling.
Even if you don’t have plans for a trip in the immediate future, you can prepare some lists with all the necessary items for every family member. For example, kids can do a list, such as the following:
- Necessary staff for the accommodation: pyjamas, slippers, favourite teddy bear, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, shampoo, body wash.
- Necessary clothes: a specific number of underwear, bottoms, t-shirts, sweaters or hoodies, jackets, and pairs of shoes.
- Additional staff: chargers, cameras, books, backpacks, sunglasses, umbrellas, hats, gloves, scarves, a travel kit, etc.
You can request kids to prepare several lists depending on the year’s season or the kind of destination.
3. Write down a list for a birthday party or a friend or family gathering
This is another subject that your kid will be happy to make a list about. Birthday cakes, soft drinks, juices, coffee, tea, and salty or sweet treats can be included. Furthermore, other items for decoration or music can be written in the list.
4. Write or copy a recipe
Recipes are always good texts to write or copy! We may keep our favourite recipes in a special notebook. Our children may be our assistants in this task. Or even if we print the recipes, the kids may write the content table.
5. Make a letter – collage.
You can spend fun and creative time with your kids, writing letters in different colours or shapes, with or without shadows or patterns, and then form words for fun or making lists. For example, create a list of the “to-do” tasks or put the letters in the proper order to assemble fairy tales’ titles.

6. Give each other notes, letters and cards.
Handwritten notes, letters and cards can also motivate kids to practise reading and writing. You can add short notes to their school bags and leave letters and cards on their desks. Pretty soon, the kids will do the same thing and probably, you will start finding notes, cards and letters in your bag, on your desk, even on your pillow.

We could also suggest multiple other lists or ideas to write with your kids, such as
- favourite family activities
- the best moments of the month or the day
- song titles
- the meals of the week
and many other ideas.
The main idea is to motivate kids to practise spelling pleasantly and spend creative time together.
